Where to Stay in Istanbul: Choose the Crossing You Want to Repeat

Istanbul is still a future trip for me. My first hotel decision would be surprisingly prosaic: which stretch of water do I want between breakfast and the thing I came to see?

A Bosphorus view may justify a room. A Bosphorus crossing needs to justify a place in the daily routine. Those are different purchases. For an initial trip focused on architecture in the historic center, I would begin with Sirkeci or lower Karaköy. I would choose Kadıköy when spending evenings on the Asian side is itself part of the purpose, with the ferry treated as an outing rather than an invisible commute.

Three Bases, Three Ordinary Days

The useful spine is the T1 tram. Metro İstanbul lists Sultanahmet, Gülhane, Sirkeci, Eminönü, Karaköy, and Kabataş on the same line, with ferry connections at several of those stops. That makes these places meaningfully connected; it does not make every hotel advertised as “central” equally convenient. The official T1 station map is the starting point.

In Sirkeci, I would look at the actual walk from the room to Gülhane or Sirkeci station and the intended morning visits. Sirkeci Mansion, for example, gives its address as Taya Hatun Sokak No. 5. That is a location candidate to plot, not a hotel I have inspected or stayed in. The question is whether its entrance and the streets around it support the route, luggage, and mobility needs. Lower Karaköy makes sense if crossing the Golden Horn for architecture is acceptable and returning to that side for the evening is attractive. I would distinguish a waterfront address from one uphill toward Galata. A short straight line on a map says nothing about how that last climb feels after dinner.

Kadıköy changes the structure more substantially. Şehir Hatları publishes a Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü service, with departures that vary by day and footnotes identifying exceptions. Before choosing a hotel there, I would check the final useful return sailing for my date, then price the alternative journey. Give One Building the Morning

My proposed architecture day would center on Süleymaniye. Türkiye's tourism authority identifies the mosque as Sinan's work for Süleyman and describes its position above the Golden Horn. That gives me a clear subject: how an imperial building organizes a skyline, then how that same authority is expressed at human scale. Go Türkiye on Süleymaniye

I would approach from the historic-center side, look at the complex from outside before entering, and reserve the interior for a permitted visitor window. My sequence would be mosque, lunch, then a descent toward Eminönü and the water. I would not add Topkapı Palace to prove that the day was sufficiently productive.

Inside, the questions I would bring are about proportion and attention. Where does the eye go first? What is doing the work: height, light, repeated arches, the relationship between a central dome and the spaces around it? Those are questions for the visit, not impressions I am claiming in advance. They follow the same discipline as spending time with one painting.

This remains an active religious site. I would confirm visitor access locally, avoid prayer periods, dress for the posted requirements, and remove shoes where required. The Hotel Test

Before booking, I would plot four journeys: arrival with bags, the architecture morning, the most likely dinner return, and departure. Then I would ask the property about step-free access and the precise vehicle drop-off. I would not claim a best hotel without comparable rooms, dates, and rates.

For this particular proposed trip, I would accept a less dramatic room in exchange for an easy first morning. The view can be an event elsewhere. Hotel location before brand is especially useful in a city where the water is both the attraction and the thing you have to cross.
