Nile Cruise or a Luxor Hotel: Decide Who Controls the Temple Day
Compare an Oberoi Philae itinerary with a proposed Luxor stay, then account for the Cairo transfer, site time, and cruise cancellation rules.

My first Egypt planning question would be how much control I want over the day at the monuments. A Nile cruise offers a moving base and an organized sequence. A Luxor hotel offers the ability to decide that one temple deserves more time and another can wait.
I have not taken either trip. This is the comparison I would make before choosing a ship or booking a flight from Cairo. I would begin with the land stay if Karnak and the west-bank tombs were the main purpose. I would choose a cruise when traveling along the river toward Aswan is part of the experience I want, not just an elegant way to avoid repacking.
Read an Actual Cruise Day
The Oberoi Philae publishes four-night and six-night itineraries. Its longer program includes a day combining Hatshepsut in the morning with Luxor and Karnak temples in the afternoon, followed by another early start for a substantial west-bank program before sailing onward. It also offers a low-water itinerary variant. Those details matter more than the phrase “luxury Nile cruise.” Philae itineraries
That schedule could be excellent for someone who wants the sequence settled and enjoys a guided overview. It would be a poor purchase if I intended to spend most of an afternoon studying one part of Karnak. I would ask for the itinerary attached to the exact sailing, including direction, embarkation point, included admissions, group size, and the scope for independent time.
A ship's pool and dining room are useful things. They cannot extend the time between the guide's arrival and the group's departure.
The Land Alternative I Would Price
My proposed Luxor stay would separate three subjects: Karnak and Luxor on the east bank; a selected Valley of the Kings visit; then Hatshepsut and another west-bank site only if interest and energy support it. I would ask a guide to quote those days separately, including transport from the actual hotel, entrance tickets, and any separately ticketed tombs.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities identifies the Valley of the Kings as the burial place of New Kingdom rulers and locates it across the river from ancient Thebes. It lists visitor hours on the site page. That geographic separation is why I would group west-bank visits rather than repeatedly cross for one item at a time. Official Valley of the Kings information
The benefit of a hotel is not necessarily lower cost. It is the option to change the second day after seeing the first. I would pay attention to whether that flexibility survives the guide's cancellation terms and any prepaid admissions. Calling a trip independent does not magically make its bookings flexible.
Cairo to Luxor Still Consumes a Day
The choice between flying and an overnight train belongs in the same calculation. EgyptAir provides a date-based timetable; Abela provides the sleeper service's schedule and booking information. These are the places I would check actual departures, not a legacy timetable returned by a search engine. EgyptAir planning tools, Abela Trains
For the flight, I would count the hotel departure, airport buffer, arrival transfer, and room access. For the sleeper, I would count the evening it occupies, the sleep I realistically expect, and what happens if arrival precedes check-in. A hotel night apparently saved can reappear as paid early access or a day spent recovering.
Without dates, I would not publish a fastest-service claim or promise an arrival hour. My default would be to reach Luxor before the first irreplaceable sightseeing day, especially before joining a cruise with a fixed embarkation.
Cancellation Is Part of the Product
Philae's published policy applies escalating cancellation charges and treats changes such as dates or cabin category as cancellations of the original booking. At the time of research it specifies the full cruise charge for cancellation less than 90 days before check-in, while also showing holiday provisions tied to particular seasons. The actual confirmation and current contract need to settle the applicable terms. Philae policies
I would compare that with the quoted hotel's deadline and the separate guide arrangements before deciding that one option is better value. A cheaper total with an earlier financial commitment may be the wrong booking while the international route is still uncertain.
The useful next step is to price the same number of nights and the same desired visits in both formats. Choose the day you want, then decide whether a ship or a hotel makes that day possible. I would rather see fewer temples attentively than acquire an impressively complete list of places where I was briefly present.
